Award Winning Dental Clinic
In 1997, when the citizens of the Greater Williamsburg area could no longer receive
dental services provided by the Health Department, Dr. Tom Luckam, a retired dentist
who had volunteered with the Health Department, took the dental program under
his wing and insured the dental clinic’s survival.
OTMC was first able to employ a part-time dentist when it was given the
funding through a 3-year grant from the Virginia Health Care Foundation.
Currently, funding for the clinic comes from The Riverside Health
System Foundation, The Williamsburg Community Health Foundation,
and Sentara Healthcare Foundation, as well as from donations from
the local dental community and other individuals, from the three
government jurisdictions, patient payments, Medicaid payments and
additional grants from civic/community clubs such as the Kiwanis, Lion’s
and Rotary Clubs. In addition to a paid staff of three part-time dentists,
two dental assistants and a receptionist, OTMC patients receive care
provided by over 30 volunteer dental professionals, who donate as many as
100 hours each month both in the clinic and in their offices -- in 2008,
they received the Virginia Community Healthcare Association Team of the Year Award.
